New Rogue One Trailer

If I wasn’t excited before, I am now!

Bruce Wayne Vs. The World

This mash up of the Dark Knight Trilogy and the Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World trailer is awesome. Perhaps too awesome because it fits together so perfectly!

I feel a Nolan’s Batman re-watch coming from watching this…

No Men Beyond This Point – Trailer

No Men Beyond This Point is a pretty fun looking mockumentary that tracks an alternative history where men are dying out. What I really like is that it is rightfully poking fun at the notions of things like men’s rights activism. Painting a semi-nightmare scenario for those types where the few men that are left have restricted laws and rules placed upon them. It’s almost like the film is inverting traditional genre roles! (I am SHOCKED by this! 😛 )

You also of course get things like, if men aren’t in charge of the world suddenly all wars stop idea/joke. Society adapting and leaving men who refuse to change with it as outsiders. All that stuff looks like it in there. It’s a simple and fun concept for a film than can and probably will provoke some food for thought. All while it explores how society and relationship dynamics could change if such a thing actually happened. You know just like the majority of similar films.

However what will be interesting is if and how the angry man side of the internet reacts to this. I’m predicting them loudly claiming it to be a propaganda film that pushes the anti-male agenda or whatever bollocks wording they have for it these days. We will see…

Ghost In The Shell – First Image

Is it wrong that I’m excited for this?

There are the whitewashing concerns but the story of Ghost In The Shell could easily be transplanted onto any major city, if done right. It is all about the convergence of man and machine. As long as the key beats and characters are there (at least in essence) we could have an entertaining and thought provoking film. All you have to do is pick which tone you are going for: The pretentious anime one or the lighter but more conceptually deep manga.

Thankfully Scarlett Johansson looks the part as the Major and that’s not just my eternal love for her talking. It is very believable that in a future where people can put their minds into android bodies that Scarlett Johansson would be one of the many models you could choose from.

Either way I doubt the movie will contain the random nudity of the anime (Warning NSFW!) or the out of left field VR sex scenes of the manga (WARNING VERY NSFW!) but we will see.

Thoughts On Batman V Superman

batman-v-superman-trinity.png

The online narrative around Batman V Superman is that it is the worst thing ever committed to film and that by watching it you are a terrible person. Like the worst. Especially if you found yourself enjoying it. If that happened then you need to revaluate your whole life and consider changing your name to something like Hitler. The film is just that bad you guys! In reality though it seems there is a disconnect between critical and fan reaction that I have not seen before.

The short-ish version is:

If you enjoyed Man of Steel, Batman V Superman is a good followup. It continues to expand the somewhat darker take on the DC characters that DC Cinematic Universe is building in a fun and very different way to the Marvel Studios movies and their slate of characters. Like Man of Steel it has a slower pace than other superhero movies and a lot of it is dedicated to building up the big conflict at the end of the movie. Ben Affleck makes a great Batman, Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor is different in a good way (for me at least) and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman steals the show in the brief appearances she makes in the movie. The film also does a good job of building out the DC Cinematic Universe in a couple of cool ways. It is far from perfect and it has its flaws like Man of Steel had but it is still a good and entertaining movie.

Personally I really enjoyed it and would say it is on par with the majority of Marvel’s movies. For me it is a case of the critics and reviews being overly harsh with a lot of them boiling down to “This isn’t the same as a Marvel movie so I don’t like it!”, “This is not how I personally perceive these long established characters to be or behave, therefore this film is a crime against nature!” or “I hate Zack Snyder and everything he stands for so I hate this movie by default!” There is also the typical regurgitation without thought of certain lines of thinking that seems to plague all discussion on the internet these days. So much so that you could make a bingo card and have some fun reading through the comments and reviews for Batman V Superman. (FYI: “Zack Snyder loves Ayn Rand!” is the free space.)

If you are interested in the characters or the concept of the film, go watch it and crucially, form your own opinions on it because it has been given a bad rap by many.

The long version is a bit more complicated…

Thoughts On Deadpool

Deadpool is a fun movie. If you like superhero movies and want to watch something a bit different within the trappings of people in costumes punching things, go see it. That is all you really need to know.

Okay, okay, you’ve twisted my arm I’ll give you a bit more!

Star Wars Episode VIII Delayed!

darth-vader-no_zpsdeb6db1e

From StarWars.com:

Today, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: Episode VIII, originally scheduled for release in summer 2017, will now debut on December 15, 2017.

The move follows the extraordinary success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was the first Star Wars movie to premiere outside the traditional summer blockbuster window and smashed numerous records, including biggest domestic and global debuts of all time as well as the biggest domestic second and third weekends, en route to becoming the highest grossing domestic release of all time with over $861.3 million and the third biggest global release ever with $1.886.7 billion.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently in preproduction and will begin principal photography in London next month. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman will produce and J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski will executive produce. Stay tuned for exciting updates in the coming weeks.

It has only been pushed back a few months so the wait will not be too bad…I hope.

I’m guessing this is equal parts Disney & Lucasfilm wanting to get the second part of the new trilogy right, especially after the success of The Force Awakens. But also possibly a conscious decision to position the main saga films in a new December release window because well, did you see all that money VII made during its December release?! Hollywood is run on superstition and attempting to do the same thing again but a bit better. December worked wonders for The Force Awakens so it will do so again for Episode VIII.

Also other genre movies are going to stay clear of future Star Wars releases due to the massive audiences that have been to see The Force Awakens. The franchise is uniquely primed to make December its home just like Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit and a good chunk of the Harry Potter films.

Undercover Boss: Star Killer Base

Adam Driver hosted Saturday Night Live over in America this weekend and they have shared this clip of Kylo Ren going undercover to find out what it is really like to work at Star Killer Base.

Part of me wants to this to be official Star Wars canon now….

Star Wars: Poe Dameron Comic Announced!

poe

That’s one hell of a pilot!

I am a huge fan of Marvel’s new official cannon Star Wars comics. I love how they are filling in the narrative gaps between the movies and other cannon material like Star Wars: Rebels. Up to now the comics have mainly been focused on the space of time between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes back.  So it is great to see the Marvel capitalising on the success and interest around The Force Awakens and releasing a new series focusing on Poe Dameron and his time with The Resistance leading up to The Force Awakens.

The creative team behind my soon to be favourite comic book is Charles Soule and Phil Noto. I love Phil Noto’s art (seriously it is beautiful) so seeing him tackling the Star Wars universe again so soon after the excellent Chewbacca miniseries is great! I have also enjoyed Soule’s writing in the past year or so. In particular his work on the new Uncanny Inhumans and Star Wars: Lando series for Marvel along with Superman/Wonder Woman for DC.

Full details and PR fluff can be found at USA Today.

As for what will happen in the book, I am just interested in finding out more about Poe seeing as I felt he was the most underused out of the new characters in The Force Awakens. Also seeing as it is a series all about Poe it means I will get to see one of my favourite things in Star Wars; space ship battles and hopefully lots of them!
