The Pull List 03/02/2016

pull list 0302

Every week I throw my money into the bottomless pit that is regular comic book reading.

Here is what I will be entertaining myself with this week along with snippets of my feelings towards said books prior to reading them:

DC

  • Action Comics #49
    • The saga of powerless Superman continues!
    • This crossover of sorts between the various Superman books is surprisingly entertaining and is paying off on the last year’s worth of stories.
  • Batgirl #48
    • Bright, colourful and always fun to read.
  • Batman & Robin Eternal #18
    • The answers are slowly coming! Some a good, some are a bit…boring.
  • Detective Comics #49
    • Robo-Batman minus the Robo equals some solid detective work from Jim.

Marvel

  • Amazing Spider-Man #7
    • I love Dan Slott’s Spider-Man but so far this has felt like it is too big of a departure from classic Spidey for me.
    • It is like Peter Parker is trying a bit too hard to be Tony Stark.
  • Captain America: Sam Wilson #6
    • This book is crazy in a good way.
    • It is full of pulpy ideas and has great moments for both character and story.
  • Invincible Iron Man #6
    • Loving Bendis’ take on Iron Man, making him feel on the cutting edge again.
    • It will be interesting to see the contrast between Mike Deodato Jr. art for this issue and David Marquez’s from the first arc.
  • Nova #6
    • I love this book.
    • It is where the fun is at!
  • Star Wars: Obi-Wan & Anakin
    • Issue one introduced us to an old fashioned adventure story that explores the Post Episode I Obi-Wan/Anakin dynamic.
    • I’m interested to see how it plays out.
    • + Steampunk airships in Star Wars!
  • Spider-Man #1
    • Miles Morales is finally getting his dues as a mainline Marvel Prime Universe character!
  • Uncanny Avengers #5
    • Its been a bit of a rocky start so far but I am willing to follow it for one or two more issues.

Image/Other

  • Klaus #3
    • It is the Secret Origin of Santa Claus!
    • It is written by Grant Morrison!
    • It is actually a good read!
  • The Walking Dead #151
    • After finishing another calm before the storm stage The Walking Dead is getting exciting again!

The Pull List 27/01/16

pullist

Every week I throw my money into the bottomless pit that is regular comic book reading.

Here is what I will be entertaining myself with this week along with snippets of my feelings towards said books prior to reading them:

Marvel

  • All-New Inhumans #3
    • I am semi-enjoying the new prime position status quo for the Inhumans in the Marvel Universe.
    • They are like the X-Men without the baggage of the X-Men continuity.
    • There is freedom for weirdness to happen which is great!
  • All-New, All-Different Avengers #4
    • I’m loving the new team but this series has not felt like it has got going yet. Hopefully this issue will fix that.
    • The cover is very kissy, kissy!
  • Star Wars: Kanan #10
    • This is the little Star Wars comic that could and I have really enjoyed it.
    • It is an interesting look at the background of one of the newer expanded universe  characters.
  • The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #4
    • The best comic on the shelves ever.
    • Seriously it is one of the highlights of my week when I get to read a new issue.
    • If you haven’t read it go read it.

DC

  • Batman & Robin Eternal #17
    • A bit of a slow burn of a series but the globe trotting adventure is starting to pay off.
    • All the Azrael is boring me to tears though, I really don’t like the character.
  • Grayson #16
    • Who knew Dick Grayson, Super Spy would be continue to be such a good book?!
    • I’m looking forward to seeing how the new post Robin War Dick Grayson handles his new….situation
  • Justice League of America #7
    • Beautiful art that make the book worth it.
    • The mildly confusing/boring story is letting the side down though.
  • Superman #48
    • Things are starting to come to a head for the underpowered Superman and it is exciting!
    • It has been an interesting ride but I am starting to get restless for Superman getting all his powers back.

Image/Other

  • Saga #33
    • The best comic being published at the moment.
    • The.
    • Best.
    • Comic.
    • Read it!

Top 10 Comic Books of 2013

Design background element(Image Source)

It is the end of the year and you know what that means! LET’S PUT EVERYTHING IN LISTS!!!!

This Top 10 Comic Books of 2013 list started out as a Top 5 but then I realised I had so much fun reading so many comic books this year that it quickly spiralled out into a Top 10. Also I’m pretty sure I could have made a Top 20 list but that just seemed ridiculous.

But before we get started here are a few honourable mentions that while being really good comic books, were just not quite good enough to make the Top 10:

DC:

  • Batman Incorporated
  • Batman ’66
  • Geoff Johns’ last issue of Green Lantern
  • Superman Unchained
  • Forever Evil

Marvel:

  • All-New X-Men
  • Avengers & New Avengers
  • Iron Man
  • Nova
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Superior Foes of Spider-Man

Image:

  • Invincible
  • The Walking Dead

Now onto the Top 10…

UPDATED! Apple banning Saga #12 isn’t about censorship it’s about inconsistency

Saga #12 cover

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING POST CONTAINS NSFW IMAGERY (YAY FOR NIPPLES!)

UPDATE:

It turns out it is not that dastardly Apple that is behind all these shenanigans but Comixology themselves! DUN DUN DUUNNNN!!!!

David Steinberger, CEO of ComiXology writes;

In the last 24 hours there has been a lot of chatter about Apple banning Saga #12 from our Comics App on the Apple App Store due to depictions of gay sex. This is simply not true, and we’d like to clarify.

As a partner of Apple, we have an obligation to respect its policies for apps and the books offered in apps.  Based on our understanding of those policies, we believed that Saga #12 could not be made available in our app, and so we did not release it today.

We did not interpret the content in question as involving any particular sexual orientation, and frankly that would have been a completely irrelevant consideration under any circumstance.

Given this, it should be clear that Apple did not reject Saga #12.

After hearing from Apple this morning, we can say that our interpretation of its policies was mistaken. You’ll be glad to know that Saga #12 will be available on our App Store app soon.

We apologize to Saga creator Brian K. Vaughn and Image Comics for any confusion this may have caused.

Still Apple isn’t totally in the clear here. Their guidelines are what has caused confusion here and caused comixology to preemptively withhold the comic from publication. I imagine someone at Apple noticed all the bad press and questioned Comixology about it, who then replied with a “well we figured you would ban it” response.

Part of me wonders why Comixology didn’t say anything sooner like when this whole thing started…

Hmmm……

Also Apple are still the ones who have banned over 1500 French comics for sexual imagery and many, many more.

ORIGINAL STORY:

So I was happily minding my own business last night. Just browsing the internet, checking my facebook, replying to emails, etc. etc. Then suddenly out of nowhere my Twitter feed erupted in a flurry of anger and ALL CAPS TYPING. It turned out that something was up with the release of Saga #12 due out later on today (1oth April). Apparantly Apple had found something in the comic they weren’t to happy with and swiftly delivered judgement. Banning it from being sold via in app purchases on the Comixology and Image Comics apps for iOS. This came as little surprise to me as I had been talking about this very thing on twitter with Bleeding Cool‘s Rich Johnston in relation to this piece about Apple censoring/banning French comics on  the day before,

Tweeting my twittersApple have refused to allow the sale of specific comics in the past but never anything as current or popular as Saga. Before we go any further I am going to show you the offending images that have caused all this to kick off,
